Desk Chair

  • The objective was to design a chair that does not visually reference existing seating products.

  • The chair is constructed from stainless steel with black leather contact surfaces.

  • The design emphasizes a floating appearance and exposed structure, using hard materials to create a sleek, modern presence.

This chair was designed from the ground up to reimagine how a chair can look and function. The elevated seat and floating backrest challenge traditional visual weight, giving the form a light, suspended quality despite its rigid construction. A concealed red steel reinforcement is integrated behind the primary support foot, providing structural strength while preserving the clean silhouette. Fully adjustable armrests and backrest allow the chair to adapt to different users, balancing experimental form with practical comfort. The result is a chair that feels architectural, intentional, and distinctly unlike conventional seating.

Balancing form and function while keeping the chair both structurally strong and visually light was one of the hardest parts of this project. I wanted it to feel like it was floating without sacrificing safety or durability, which led to a lot of experimentation and second guessing along the way. I explored three different structural approaches, starting with a spring loaded suspension, then testing an air based system, and finally landing on a metal leaf spring. Each attempt exposed new problems and pushed the design forward, and the final solution came from learning what didn’t work and refining what did until the chair felt stable, durable, and visually effortless.
